Hello everyone,
I've been having some problems with my Camaro, it's a 1991 Camaro RS 3.1 with a Multi-Port fuel injection system. I've had it for a year and it ran fine until about 2 weeks ago.
I went to taco bell one night while it was raining and all of a sudden it just quit. I waited about 15 seconds and tried it again, and after a couple cranks it started back up. It ran fine all the way to my dorms, but the next day it didn't want to start at all, I cranked it a couple times and after a few it finally started, and after it starts and runs i can turn it on and off just fine.

A week later I drove it home for summer, and it was doing fine until about 200 miles on the highway, then all of a sudden I couldn't accelerate and I could only give it a little bit of gas to keep it going.
Now I try to start it and it only cranks, no fire or anything. Every once in a while it will sound like it's about to fire but only catches once or so.

I checked the fuses, replaced the fuel filter, and it sounds like the fuel pump is working alright (I hear it humming for about 2 seconds when I turn the key to the power position). Not sure what to check now, could it be that the timing belt slipped? Any help will be appreciated, and I will gladly answer in more detail anything you need to know more about.

I also checked the Fuel pressure, and it stays at a constant 42PSI... I'm also getting spark from the spark plugs. I also changed the rotor and distributor cap, with no change. Any other ideas? Is there a way to check the computer? I'm not too sure on how to check for fault codes, any help will be appreciated =D.

Well it sounds like you are going about this the right way........

Just so we're on the same page.......

The car won't run now.

All these tests you've run was while the engine wouldn't start?


If that is correct, grab a can of carb clean or starting fluid and spray some down the throttle body and see if this will make the engine start & run for a few seconds....... depending on what happens would tell you which area you would need to be looking at next.............

Right. The car won't start, and yes I ran the tests while the engine wouldn't start.

And for the test... where do I spray the stuff in when it's multi-port fuel injected system? Or is there another way I have to take for this case?

Sidom was on this but I'll answer - diagram a bit small to read #ed stuff but with snorkel closest to that throttle body removed (carefully) just look where the air goes in. There will be ~2.5 inch circle that pivots open and closes is the throttle plate........spray there, put snorkel back on and quick fire it up. As Sidom said if it wasn't starting and that gives you a few seconds of it firing up then there's a fuel issue to chase down.

All that is just to sort out whether it's a fuel or spark issue to proceed on where to go next,

Mmk thanks, I tried that but nothing happened... Do you think it's a spark problem? Where should I go from here? Thanks ^_^

Next is checking for spark at a plug. They sell in line spark testers that help and without tricks a helper to crank engine. It's possible that you have neither. Still isolating the issue right now. If carb cleaner did nothing at all you might try starting fluid which is a bit more flammable but do put snorkel back on as it works as a spark arrestor also if it back fired at you,

Alright, I tried both carb cleaner and starting fluid (and put the snorkel back on), and nothing happened. I checked two of the spark plugs and they both had a light yellow spark. Should check all of them? Those two spark plugs had gas on them... and I had just replaced all of the spark plugs after this happened. Could they be gas fouled? Should I pull them out and let them sit out for a while? Is there a way to get the gas out of the plug hole?

While by no means scientific, usually you want to see a blue spark, yellow sometimes indicates a weak coil or resistance.

Going off what you said I would go to a parts store and get an adjustable spark tester and verify the coil strength...

Put it on a plug wire and wind it out to a min of 20kv and even try 40kv. The spark should be able to jump that gap no problem, if it can't you may have a weak coil.........
