89 f-50 quits running usually when hot outside Sign In

i have a 89 f-150 4x4 with a 5.0 and auto trans.during the hotter days of the summer, the truck would quit running. usually it will start acting up like it is running out of fuel, as in cutting out, backfiring through the breather box etc. i figured fuel pump, it is the model with a in tank pump and a frame mounted pump. i changed both pumps and it has been doing good, other than my fuel guage being way off, it runs out of fuel at 1/4 tank. well anyway today i was at a drive through line and had to sit about 10 minutes, well it just died like i shut off the key. i rstarted it, but it ran real rough and was labor knocking and smoking out the exhaust. i pushed the truck out of line and let it det for about 20 minutes and it started but ran really rough gain and was still smoking, usually when it does this, the exhaust fumes have a really weird smell to it.after sitting for about 10 more minutes, it started right up and ran good. i run 70 mph for about 25 miles and it started cutting out, i managed to make it off of the interstate and it died on a side street. and wouldnt start for 20 minutes,it started right up and ran good the rest of the way home(about 1 mile) i checked the fire one day while broke down, and it was good and blue. today when it quit the last time, i mashed the scraeder valve on the fuel rail and it had lots of pressure, but it didnt look like much gas coming out. any info would me much appreciated. i am scared it is gonna quit me for good on a drive one day

Below shows a pic of the fuel pump relay - probably underhood. They can do what's happening and testing is futile as it can work sometimes and you've had troubles. These are not so expensive to just toss it for a new one - have the old for a spare if this doesn't solve the issue. If you can catch it, try testing fuel pressure with a gauge but you'll have to catch it down or that could be inconclusive. It stinks as if you replace this when it's working well you won't know for sure unless it doesn't happen again for some period of time. Not so reassuring that it's fixed right away but worth the try IMO. Certainly look at the plug connection also while there, T Relay - Fuel Pump Gp-Sorensen / Relay - Fuel Pump for a 1989 Ford Truck F150 1/2 ton P/U 2WD

the relay is still in the bracket that they attached to from the factory, it has two relays there, is there any way to tell which one is fuel ? and also any ideas what the other one is for ? thanks

In the cars for 89 there's GREEN on the OE plug or relay skirting. If you have more trouble finding which one I'll go out and look at an 89 Ford product and find the wire colors as I'm about sure Ford products use same colors and hope the truck line up is the same but can't be sure,

Ok: Just looked at two full size Lincolns, 88 and 89. Both fuel pump relays on those had large gauge orange and yellow wires and smaller gauge greenish with stripe (couldn't see) and red - those were OE and the green was on teh OE relay. If replaced it could just be gray and universal. OE ones won't fit other items and many aftermarket ones fit others exactly and can be swapped but double check part #s if you do that.

These were both sudden loss items, intermittent, or can just pass thru inadequate current but test ok so it's a game and only a known good one from a vehicle that doesn't have a problem would be definative.

Hope that helps and colors are the same for yours. In that you have two fuel pumps there could be two and I can't expound on that with any data I can access right now,

Good luck,

T

Re: 89 f-50 quits running usually when hot outside Sign In

i have the green base on my fuel relay plug. i am not sure since i havent owned this truck since new, but both of the relays there are motorcraft relays. the truck supposedly only has 89 k original miles, so they may be original.i have a friend who told me it could be my ignition module, even tho it was firing the one time when it quit running.

Re: 89 f-50 quits running usually when hot outside Sign In

our post just crossed swords! The green is on the OE skirt for fuel pump. I knew that without looking but not the wire colors. Have spare universal relays in all (own several) 80s Fords myself.

Do know that these are clipped in, in a funky way. Small slotted screwdriver will release bail - one holds in the plastic and another holds the plug to relay. Just forgot but they might be P-U-S-H to release instead of pull - they can break the bails and still be fine.

Don't know how the trucks do it, but these cars us a housing for several relays mounted to inside fender that comes off with 5/16th or 8mm (same) little bolts or the cars can just be bent up to get at them without undoing the bolts. Can't say for trucks how or where they placed these.

Just so you know - I've had more failures with aftermarket replacements than originals! Have three of these cars now and put OE old ones back in out of known working cars as they have all failed by surprise at one time or more and I keep the universal replacement in glovebox as it fits the others. Only the skirting makes these indexed for one item's use only - otherwise I think they are identical. Later Fords did just use the same part # for many of them and I'd tell folks in trouble to use the A/C one in the fuel pump spot or EEC spot as the way to get one going if broken down.

These may also temporarily snap out of it if you just give a bad one a good whack with like a plastic end of a screwdriver.

Relays are points that touch and release inside. They can work for days or quit like nothing. Some can be temp sensitive so I know of nothing but tossing them as the test for these suckers. Then if it doesn't help the problem you can guess that the old one was good and save it. I also can't pin a life expectancy to these things. Some just last forever and some just up and don't??
