88 Beretta 2.0 5 spd, engine fires and then shuts right down Sign In

I have an 88 Chevy Beretta 2.0 4 cyl. 5 spd. 213000 on the car and 60000 on the motor. Been on the transplant motor for 8000 miles. No previous issues. Started the car yesterday with no issues. Drove 6 miles and parked it. Drove another 6 and parked it for an hour. Tried to start it . It fired all 4 cylinders and died. 10 more tries and , no luck. Knew the rear 'inline can fuel filter' had some miles on it. Changed it and then it started. Drove it around the block and then started it several times...perfect. Two hours later, won't start. On the fifth try it started and ran normally. It set overnight and started in the morning and I took it to the Service Center. Put it on the lift, won't start again. Shop Tech looked at fuel pressure (40 lbs on engine spin) , spark ( strong and regular), plugs are normal, injector spraying and connections all seem tight. Replaced the sensor behind the motor that tells the fuel pump to continue pumping on run cycle. Any thoughts ??

Fuel pressure is way too high. Where did the tech connect his/her fuel pressure gauge?

If you had a 2.8 it would be.

Pressure like that on a TBI would spray so much fuel when the injector was pulsed, it probably would flood the engine. Specs is 9-13 psi when you prime the pump by turning the ignition on.

Hmm don't know !! Has always had the 4 cyl 2.0 . where should it be on a 4 cyl and would this reveal the problem after all these miles ??

I'm a carb guy so fuel injection and electronic ignition isn't exactly up my alley. He connected the pressure guage just before the throttle body .

Maybe he was dead heading the pump and got that reading. You have to T the gauge inline on the fuel inlet to get the system pressure at the injector. Dead heading tells you that the pump is capable of producing that amount of pressure, but doesn't tell you if the regulator is malfunctioning or you have some sort of restriction back to the tank.

Oh Ok , I'll pass it along to him. Maybe I need to switch techs. A lot of head scratching going on at the shop. I don't think he is aware of fuel troubleshooting. Is what I described still pointing toward fuel issues ??

Not sure on that because we don't have the details of the test results and how those tests were performed. It's true that you need to have the basics: spark, fuel, and compression for an engine run, but they all have to occur at the right time and the correct duration. Some of those types of tests can get really complicated if you have all the basics.
