87 mustang 302 ho, top radiator hose collapsing Sign In

what could cause this, maybe a blown head gasket, this is on the motor i got for my 66 mustang. the guy i got it from said the top radiator hose was collapsing on itself, he said someone told him he had the wrong waterpump, but if that was the case, then why would it fit. any ideas. i plan to take off the heads anyway and have them sent off for valve jobs, then i am putting on new head and intake gaskets. thanks.

Not certain but I think the HO, 5.0 spins opposite the regular 5.0 and would/could be able to suck upper hose closed. Waterpump should be drawing from the lower hose which is why they put a spring in many so they won't collapse.

If (again not sure) it's counter rotating then all items that are belt driven will need to be workable either way,

so if he bought a water pump for a regular 5.0, not a ho, it would fit, but might not spin the right way. is that right

As said I'm not certain of the rotation BUT the HO engine (5.0s) do put everything reversed at a glance - haven't had to work on any HOs - they look like a mirror image of what you would find in a Grand Marquis for example.

The upper intake is towards passenger side and firing order isn't the same TMK either which suggests counter rotation. Impellers can be directional - not all but I can't think of much that would suck an UPPER hose shut other than the wrong parts on that engine.

Just check parts #s and bet you find it's not the same as the same year Crown Vic or some plain 5.0s.

Also - there was a change in 5.0s in the large cars in 87. You need to know the date it was made for the correct parts for several things - I think cars built after 6/87 have a different designation, even though the same model year,
