87 ford festiva-doesnt want to go over 45 mph unless you let off the gas pedal a lil bit??

I replaced the thermostat on this ford festiva and everything seems fine until you try to get on the freeway and it doesnt want to go over 45 mph but when you let up on the gas pedal a lil bit it will gradually get up to speed and it wasnt like that befor i changed the thermostat and its getting worse. when i replaced the thermostat i had to remove the distributor to get to the therm. housing but i marked everything befor i took it off, and it doesnt seem like timing it seems more like its not getting fuel? (the temp gauge and the fuel guage dont work ) but no its not out of gas ,but is kind of acting like it. could it be an unrelated problem like a fuel filter or fuel pump?

How many miles on this?
Check engine light on?
When it doesn't want to go any faster is the engine bucking, backfiring, or surging?
