Mad85 accord will rev up to 3000 rpm at start. Can kick off choke and at idle will barely stay running. Float level in carb windows is correct. Replaced fuel filter, primary one. Replaced plugs, all four old were carbon fouled. Tried adjusting Distributor while in park and idleing but to no help. Tried to see if leaking at carb base w/ carb cleaner none apparent. So is this a timing problem or a vacum problem. This accord has miles of vac lines. Who has a clue? please advise! I gotta get this thing running, soon!!

the later carbs were a nightmare! Just cold (engine off) set choke and look at all the items that move with it and then open it and watch what moves. Lots of gadgets that can stick, broken perhaps, but start with things clean (carb cleaner) so you can at least see.

Sure seems choke related so look for all items involved at the carb,

Tom Greenleaf,
Thanks for the new perspective. I was ready to fight major battle w/ vacuum lines and/or timing problems. I was forgetting the rule to keep it simple and look for the small and easy reason why something isn`t working. I`ll check out carb and choke related parts.

You said plugs were carbon fouled which leads to the choke as an issue. I don't know precicely what or how this one does it but when engine first starts the choke needs to crack open a bit for a smooth but raised idle - 3000 isn't one of the settings so it may have been messed with.

Late carb will have mechanical items, electric AND vacuum parts to just the choke. Any are in the cards. Somewhere in the mix this choke is probably staying ON (too rich) too long causing the plugs to foul AND run lousy. You may need to force the choke off, clean anything that moves especially outside. If it doesn't want to shut off you may also need to somehow wire it off and run engine till it runs well so diagnosis isn't confused with refouled plugs and such.

For suspect vac leaks - target carb cleaner right at a spot - hose or whatevers and if it makes it run better or worse take note of that part.

With whatever tricks you do to hold things or forced open for testing just pay attention and don't be on a long list of old folks who have dropped something down the carb and really flicked things up!

Did you ever find out what it was? My car is doing that exact same thing.

Please start your own thread with your own exact problem not on a thread from 2008!
