1985 chevy sprint
3 cyl 1.0 auto
2wd
miles: a lot... odometer says 34k (134k? 234k?)

I got this car as a FREEBE, I had one of these a few years ago and loved it, so I figured if I could get it goin easily it would be a great hunting/fishing/fuel saver.

got it home and checked the fluids, all were good. oil was still very clean, the guy I got it from had just changed the oil.

He had got it for his son and his son drove it for a couple months than bought a truck.

ok, now for the reason i'm posting this:

When I first started the car, it smoked A LOT. within a few minutes it filled the entire driveway with light blue smoke with the distinct smell of burnt oil.

I also noticed a miss, that went away once the car warmed up.

I checked the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, all good.

No blow by (I checked by removing the oil filler cap while the engine was running)

I decided to change the valve seals to see if that would help. (I was able to change them without removing the head) It did not help at all.

I checked compression cyl 1: 165psi cyl 2: 175 psi cyl 3: 150psi

It's an old car that has seen better days, so I am trying to fix this without dumping a ton of money or time into it. Mainly, it's got me stumped as to why its burning oil so fast, I can't figure it out.

anyone have any ideas other than a rebuild of top end or engine overhaul?

thanks in advance
andrew

Don't think it is a 3.0. It would have a huge bore or the longest stroke ever. More like 1.0L

Maybe an oil control ring problem or extremely worn out valve guide(s).

Sounds like the engine may need an overhaul.

sorry about that, I meant 3 cyl 1.0

would it still have a lot of oil pass through the valve guides with new valve seals?

thanks for the reply

also, wouldn't there be at least a little blow by if there was any problems with the rings?

thanks again

Sure. Especially at idle where the intake pressure is low. It will suck oil right down the guide.

Oil control ring breaks or is worn out, you won't see huge blow by because you still have compression rings that are sealing. It will just smoke like Cheech and Chong.

ok, I was wondering if the valve guides are easily replaced or is it better to just buy a remanned head?

thanks again

If memory serves me right (50/50 these days) THe 1.0L had a fairly common problem. When the aluminum block was overheated it would warp and egg shape the cylinder walls.Often the compression test would read sorta ok ,but it was a false reading due to the oil in the cylinders . let eng sit a couple of days with plugs out then do comp test and compare .

Re: 85 chevy sprint burning oil like crazy, can't figure out why Sign In

ok thanks i'll try that... I found a local guy that is very familiar with the geos/sprints, he is gonna come over when I go to tear down the engine. I'm going to wait until I tear it down before I decide to buy a rebuild kit for it.

I have an idea for the car if the engine ends up being too far gone to rebuild.

I'm going to turn it into an offroad camp trailer. I know it sounds redneck and insane, but I think it will come out pretty cool once done. If I can figure out how to post pictures here I will post them (if I don't get the engine fixed)

thanks for the help

The sprints/metros have to be one of the cheapest and easiest engines to rebuild.
I had to rebuild the top end on a 96 1.3 4cyl metro last year and it was easy as pie.
These little cars are a lot of fun.
Have fun!Cool
