81 Volvo - Starts but sparks and smokes from distributor cap area.	Sign In

I drove to work with no problems. Got off work and went to start car, and it wouldn't stay running once it start. It starts and turns over, but dies almost instantly. About every other time it arcs and sparks from the distributor wires. Blue smoke and the smell of something burning follows.

Model and engine size?

Sparks from the distributor wires. Do you mean the high tension plug wires?

Its an 81 240 series. 2.1 And yeah I meant the plug wires, sorry.

If you have sparks jumping around, you probably got secondary voltage leaking to ground. You'll probably need to replace the distributor cap, rotor, wires, and spark plugs( if worn).

If secondary is leaking to ground, it can cause the engine to not start, backfire, or misfire.
