79.99 for a cleaning of fuel injectors good? Sign In

1998 Ford Taurus/128000/3.0/6cylinder

I am considering having the fuel injectors professionally cleaned. The place I am looking at taking it says the cost is $79.99 and they clean them by running cleaning solution through them while the engine is running. My questions are:

1. How does the engine run with this cleaning fluid being injected into it?
2. Does this way of cleaning help?
3. Is $79.99 a fair price?
4. Could this help address my misfire issue?
5. About how long does something like this take?

  1. The fluid is combustible and burns just like gasoline
  2. It helps a lot in keeping injectors clean with a full, even spray
  3. $79.95 is a very fair price. I get $129.95
  4. Only if dirty injectors is the reason you have a misfire in the first place
  5. Usually about an hour or less if they know what they are doing and know how to disable the fuel pump easily.

My thought is that they probably need it given the age and milage on the engine plus that the car sat for a while and probably got bad gas. Plus after the cleaning and the misfire is still there, I would assume that would rule out the problem being the fuel injector and that would be one less thing to look for in figuring it out. I guess is a fuel injector cleaning something cars should with 128000 miles on it should have done just for basic maintance.

It should have had it done for maintenance long before that mileage.

There are certainly no guarantees of it resolving all fuel injector problems. If the injector problem is electrical and not varnish, it won't do anything. Sometimes it takes more than one cleaning if it has gotten severely varnished. It also depends on the quality and strength of the chemical they uses. Like anything else, there are many brands available and some work better than others. I don't care for Wynns products at all. They are more interested in marketing than results.

Well it may have, being I bought it at auction I am not sure what has and has not been done to the car. I can tell the tires are pretty new, and the serpentine belt looks pretty new. I have changed the oil and put in a new air filter. The transmission fluid looks good (I was told if it was brown or dirty that was bad). But given it was a goodwill auction purchase I am just guessing a fuel injector cleaning has not been done. I just was wondering how much help it would be, how often you should do it and if $79.99 is a fair price.
