Hi all.. I just got this truck. It has been sitting for six years and just started working on it. After replacing external parts with out driving it, it ran and the idle was great.. i made it 2 blocks away from my house after i got it ready to go and it started running rough, back firing, shouts fire out of the exhaust and not wanting to idle, so i am in the middle of checking the timing chain and there is a little play in it, the cam gear dot is just a hair off straight down after moving it to what the marks show for TDC, and the crank gear has three different designs on it the one that is a hair off being straight up is a rectangle the triangle is to the right and the dot is to the left, also i pulled the cap off and the rotor looks to be 180 degree's out cause it is firing on the number 6 cylinder spot, before i this i tryed the timing light method and the more i got it to where it was top dead center i crappier it started to sound which led me to checking the timing chain... and so i need to know how much slack the timing chain should have and what i should do from here???

Lets be sure the basics are set correct. The crank gear should have a "0" stamped on the face of gear . Turn the crank till this mark is EXACTLY at 12 o'clock. The cam gear should also have a "0" mark and it should be EXACTLY at 6 o'clock .This setting is NOT TDC #1 . It is TDC #6. THe chain is installed this way because iit makes the marks closer and easier to line up..With the chain on now rotate the crankshaft 1 revolution. The marks will now be at 12(cam) and 6(crank) which is TDC #1. Now see if the dist rotor is pointing at the number 1 plug wire . If not rremove and rotate till it points at #1 wire after the dist spirals down and is seated. With cover on there should be a tab with lines on it. Install dampener. Look down ,sometimes behind waterpump and a line on balancer should align with tab marks . Take some bright nail polish ,(WHITE) ? and make a line acrioss tab. This is your 0 degree mark for a timing light. Each line on the tab is equal to 2 degrees . I woud start around 10 degrees and see how it runs.

Re: 5.7 350 firing is off Sign In

the crank gear has 3 different symbols a rectangle, triangle and dot, when the cam is at 6 o'clock the crank has the rectangle at 12 o'clock, so do i take the chain of and rotate to the dot? because there are 3 different key slots on the crank gear.... in a clockwise motion the dot would come next but at the moment the crank would not be... it's a 58 link chain which i was told what for advanced timing and the different symbols didn't matter because the distributor was on the #6 when i started with the rectangle being 12 o'clock and the cam at 6 o'clock... so should i try to move the crank gear to the dot after all???

WOW, you sure can complicate something that is rather simple. What's the year, make and model? I'll see if I can find a picture.

Re: 5.7 350 firing is off Sign In

thank you for the picture.. the cam gear is the same as the picture but the crank gear is set right now to that same way with the key lock but there are not double dots on it... as of now the crank gear being set that way with the key lock the rectangle is at 6 0'clock... so everything you have explained is dead on other then the crank gear using the correct symbol... so what should i do about the crank gear??? ps thank you for the assistance

The square being at 6 oclock has no bearing on the cam timing.Put the keys in the positions shown If there is no "0" mark at 12 oclock on the crank gear ,then make one with a marker . When you turn the crank one turn tne mark you made will be back at 12 ,the cam gear will now be at 12. This is TDC #1, ignore the other marks.

Sounds like the chain & gear are ok to me,i didn't catch the year but if its got the flat style dist cap on it (plugwires coming from the sides instead of the top ) ,don't even look at it twice..replace it ! these were a terrable design and will give you all the signs you discribed.
PS after replacing the cap and rotor hold the gas to the floor while cranking it because it will likely be flooded from all the cranking done before the repairs were made.Good luck
