Ok, can anyone offer any help? I have an 84 chevy 305 and it has a 4bbl quadrajet on it. It is in need for an overhaul. I was considering just putting a brand new unit on this manifold instead. What are the best carbs for this engine or should I get the old one rebuilt? What carbs could I put on without making any other modifications? The shop said it would cost me about 250 to rebuild. I would mind even going with a manual choke carb.

What about this carb makes it need to be rebuild instead of just fixing it? Would you consider doing this yourself? Parts for just rebuild aren't too expensive but you do need some tools and none are so rare that if you have a fair warchest of tools you can do it. It's mostly cleaning and setting adjustments, but know they are fussy and take some patience. I would keep it a quad but Holley probably make an exact fit replacement. Keep the automatic choke - trust me it's a nightmare to defeat it. 1984 was a lousy year for carbs and this one is no exception. What usually goes wrong is the choke pull offs - you only need the front one, and the choke will be rivoted in so you have to drill it out and use screws to replace that. Idle mixture is pre-set and they plug it off so you can't mess with it but you can knock out the plugs and put in needle adjustment ones that are easy. Price out what a pre-rebuilt costs as I bet they have come way down in price. There are several parts that a rebuild kit won't include that can add up so I'd say if you can buy a whole rebuilt for $150 or so you would be ahead of the game. The key to the decision is what's wrong with it right now? T
