2010 Dodge Grand Caravan grinding sound upon cold start Sign In

Hello all,

I am desperate for some answers, because the dealership keeps giving me the run around. I own a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 4.0 L V6 engine, and whenever it has sat without being started regardless of the temperature outside for about 48 hours, when I start the engine it has this horrible grinding sound that lasts about a second or two and then goes away. I took it into the dealer since it is still under warranty, and they let it sit over night which I knew was not going to be long enough to duplicate the sound, but either way upon starting it they of course did not hear anything. Later upon doing a further inspection they advised me that they had put the wrong weight of oil the last time it was replaced, they said they had put 5w instead of 10w which I guess is the correct weight for the type of engine it has. I know nothing about cars so this is all foreign to me so please bear with me... But to make a long story short it is still making that sound upon sitting for about 48 hours or sometimes less without being started. Also if it helps the vehicle only has approx 10,500 miles on it and is still under warranty and really want this to be fixed while the warranty is still in effect. I f anyone could please help, I would greatly appreciate it!

Adrian

First - Keep good records that you complained of this, who you dealt with and what you were told. Get things in writing.

Seems to be starter, starter drive related IMO so far. Trouble is with the dealer is they can't guess and replace things just because you said so.

Can you leave it longer so it will do it for them? Can you be there too so you know they heard it. Damn stuff like this if it doesn't stay broken or do this "grinding" for only a couple seconds it is going to be tough for them to dig into it.

This may or may not be a "run around" with the dealer. Just can't say.

Keep at it up to trying another dealer, phone calls to company - whatever it takes. Ask if there are any TSBs (technical service bulletins) on this complaint too,

T

Tom has good info so I'll just add a note...

On getting the problem to happen for the dealer......Notice the exact pattern than needs to occur and then make sure the dealer does this.....If it needs to sit outside all night, let them know that. If something needs to be on...tell them to leave it on...etc. If this needs to sit for 2 days, stress that. I can't tell you how many overnight cold running problems I've had, only to come in to see a installer driving out of the shop to park it......Mad

My 1st thought was the starter was hanging up as well.......

Really hard to even guess on that without actually hearing the sound. Where in the engine bay does the sound appear like it is coming from? Has it been making this sound since you have owned the vehicle?

If you take it back to the dealer, tell them you would like to be there after the vehicle has sat when they go to start it up. That way you can point the noise out to them. A noise you are hearing may be a characteristic of that vehicle that they are used to hearing.

For example: You may hear a grinding noise in the engine upon a cold start up that goes away as the engine heats up. You point the noise out to the tech while he/she cranks it up. The tech recognizes the noise and tells you that is the air rushing through idle air control system and is a characteristic of that system.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thank you so much for all the great advice! I really appreciate it! I think I am just going to have to tell them to not touch it for two days and then let me be there when it is started, so that we can all be on the same page, just like what was mentioned above. It's just a hassle to have to be down a vehicle for 2 days just to replicate a sound. I'm pretty sure my ignorance is showing in my frustration that by me just explaining the issue that they are not able to fix it, and that they are not just trying to get out of warranty work...Either way I trust that there is a meaning to the madness, and will try to get this resolved. Also do any of you think if I told the dealer that I think it's a problem with the starter, that they would maybe do more of a thorough inspection of it, and possibly replace it?

If you've had a bad starter that made noise by broken tooth or drive just maybe SUGGEST is sounds like that noise but I think it's best to just explain what you have here and let them make the diagnosis on their own.

Been a VERY long time since I worked for a dealer (new cars) and company doesn't want guesswork nor have to pay the dealer for mistakes so there will be some explaining to do on their part.

Good luck - hope they can just tell if/ when heard in person,

T
