2007 hhr auto transmission won't shift properly

.has 61k on it,it's the LS model has the small engine for that yr.when i first start it cold,engine races and wants to jump in gear when shifting from park to reverse,if i wait another minute it may pause which then i need to hit the gas peddle for it to jump into gear.IF I WAIT ROUGHLY 4 MIN WHEN I START THE ENGINE AND ALLOW IT TO WARM UP IT SHIFTS PERFECLY IN ALL GEARS EVEN IF I LEAVE IT FOR HRS. there hasn't been any CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON YET.we've had this for 3 yrs and I've never changed the transmission fluid.I don't think it mechanicle!! But is it the fluid or a sensor(I'm basic as far as auto mechanics
