Hi, I have a Peugeot 207 1.4L petrol, that has done c. 60k miles. The car started to lose coolant gradually but I was doing 400 miles a week in it so wasn't too concerned. This suddenly got much worse over the space of 2 days when I topped it up before each journey and then the engine temp gauge started going crazy up and down. When this happened I stopped car, let it cool and then topped up with coolant again. On the second day I noticed smoky fumes coming out the back and then the car started to make a 'knocking' sound from the engine and lose power. I obviously stopped driving! Does this sound like a head gasket blown? I'm having real trouble trying to get a mobile mechanic to come and have a look before I decide whether its worth fixing or not.

Yep, sounds like you dove it a little too far. You probably turned a $100 repair into a $3000 repair but you need to get it diagnosed to know anything for sure.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Think you are correct HT but change the currency with the same costs for this location. £100 - £3,000 in $US multiply by 1.63 is probably the real cost now - nasty mistake to not tend to when it was just a leak........ T
