Need help. Engine light goes on and off over several months. When light is on car runs rough shifts hard, eats gas like crazy. When light is off car runs great.

Recently car engine light has stayed on and hasn't gone off. Got in the car to go to work, 1/2 mile down the car acted as if it was running out of gas and shut off. Would not start at all. All dome lights and headlights still came on though. I knew the battery wasnt dead. Had car towed.

Hooked it up to battery charger anyway for a few hours and car started.
But this time not online is the engine light still on, it know reads reduce speed. It runs terriable and you can't drive it. It has no power or pick up. Please help.

My email is ( private email address removed).... please help
Thank you....

Took out your email address - this is open web and you could get spammed out of your mind.

You need to get the codes read with the #s and post them. Battery wasn't apparently so well charged when it didn't start as charging it worked. You can't judge a battery just because some lights work.

Any vehicle running lousy for whatever reason will set off "engine light" and seems your car isn't charging properly or weak battery so far which confuses engine controls computer monitored and adjustments made with bad input info.

Codes need reading, charging system and battery needs to be checked and tested. Running it when it acts up can and will harm sensors, converters and probably going into a "limp" mode before it wouldn't start later at all.

Ignoring CEL (check engine light) especially when running poorly is just making it worse and more codes so need to get those and interpret them as to first steps to take for the fixes,

T
