2006 kia broken timing belt or gears? Sign In

Hi Guys, My son has a 2006 Kia optima 4cyl., engine just died, ran fine up to this point. Turns over, but a quick look(under the front cover) I see the camshaft isn't turning. The car has 107,000 miles on it and the boy isn't hard on it. The timing belt appears to be intact, and looks healthy. Wonder if maby a woodruff key broke, a nylon gear, tensioner, something is slipping. Hate to think the worse, maby bent valves. Guess I have to tear into it, any suggestions? Thank You. Cecil

If the camshaft isn't turning, it's already too late. It's likely the timing belt stripped the teeth off. Bent valves are pretty much a sure thing.

Hat to be the bearer of bad news but if you don't adhere to the maintenance schedule on these, this is what happens.

Here is the schedule for the belt

Quote
Normal service, inspect every 30,000 miles or 30 months, replace every 60,000 miles or 60 months. Severe service, inspect every 20,000 miles or 20 months, and replace every 40,000 miles or 40 months.
