2006 Saturn Ion - Intermittent Misfire on Cylinder 4 Sign In

I have a 2006 Saturn ION-3 (2.2L, 84,000 miles) with a P0304 code (misfire on cylinder 4). The misfire is very intermittent, sometimes causing the check engine light to go on, and then disappearing for several drive cycles.

Typically, the misfire will occur at idle or when going slow - but it never happens when traveling at freeway speeds. Also, strangely, it seems to happen in spurts - the engine will run a little rough at low speeds/idle for a few drive cycles, then the problem will seemingly disappear and the car will run beautifully for several drive cycles.

I've recently replaced the plugs, wires, ignition coil, and ignition coil control module with new ones - the problem remains. Swapping either the plugs or wires from a working cylinder don't move the misfire to the other cylinder - it remains on cylinder 4. Examining the plug after it's in cylinder 4 doesn't show any wetness (so I don't think there's any coolant or oil on it) nor any carbon scarring.

I took the car to a mechanic, and he ran a compression test on the cylinders. All of them are above the manufacture's spec of 100 lbs (cylinder 4 is sitting at 130). The mechanic also replaced the fuel injector for cylinder 4, but the problem remains (although it seems to have gotten a little better - longer time between "misfire drive cycles").

The misfire code doesn't appear with any other codes (no fuel mixture codes).

I'm just at a loss for what this problem could be - I feel like I've checked all of the standard items (compression, fuel system, ignition system).

Any suggestions for where to look next are greatly appreciated!
