2006 Pontiac Grand Prix overheating

2006 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8 v6 no supercharger.
I drove about 500 miles with no complications last weekend, then it began overheating yesterday at a stoplight within 10 minutes of starting. the heater was putting out cold air at the time and the temperature gauge rose to just within the red. The temperature lowered when i accelerated and continued to inch its way up at the next few stops, then dropped to normal running temp at freeway speeds. I replaced my thermostat with a failsafe thermostat and nothing has changed. the heater continues to put out cold air when the car starts to overheat. I also received a warning that the AC system had been turned off to protect the engine, although the AC hasn't been used in months.
my next step will be to get another thermostat from the parts store in case this one is malfunctioning, then flush the coolant system if that doesn't work. any advice would be much appreciated.

The heater is putting out cold air because the system is full of air, likely due to a leak. You need to pressure test the cooling system to locate the leak.
