2006 Mercedes ML350 60000 KM engine sludge. How bad is this? Sign In

Hi all,

My wife didn't change the oil on this 2006 ML350 for slightly under a year I'm guessing and didn't get the car serviced in general. When I finally sent it out there the Mercedes techs at first said there was "some" sludge in the engine and I had brought it in just in time and cleaned it up but then on the day they were supposed to release the car began claiming they highly recommended I let them dismount the engine and take it apart and clean it up. I had no idea what it would cost (and he didn't feel it fit to share it with me) so I OKed it. However I happened to call them back a couple days later and just happened to inquire what all this was going to cost and they mentioned $3600!! The car's only worth $36000 where I'm at so that's 10% of the value of the car.

I guess my question is, how bad does this really look and is all this dismantling REALLY necessary?? Because now the mechanic claims the engine will die in 2 months if we don't do this even though the warnings were nowhere near this bad when I initially talked to him. I am guessing this is because they've already dismounted the engine and they're basically going to not get much for the job if I just have them put it back.

Suggestions please, here's the pics they sent of the INITIAL condition (although this is all likely cleaned up now since this could be reached without opening it up)!

That is pretty bad. I wonder how the top of the engine and the bearings look? I would definitively say dismantling the engine and cleaning all the ports out and inspecting bearings is in order.

Yep, that's pretty bad. ................. I'd divorce her..........LOL

I hop you learned a lesson too about authorizing things without an estimate.

If he divorced her, he probably would be out more than $3,600....Shocked
