2006 Kia Rio -lack of frequent oil changes Sign In

2006, Kia , RIO (Base model), 1.6L, 105,000 Miles

My Wife lives in crazy hot Texas and going to college she had been driving a lot of miles and went very long times (prior to knowing her) without oil changes sometimes going maybe as far as 20,000+ miles. I've been doing as much preventative maintance to help get as much out of the car as is possible as is still being paid for and I know how damaging that could have been. Ive considored an oil system flush but really don't know if I should or just stay on the oil changes as I have been. The car runs just fine and had the head and valves done due to a broken Timing Belt while driving it. What product is best recommended if a Flush is recommended.

Secondly: can anyone reccomend any auto repair site with comprehensive online repair information with real pictures. Neither of our cars have Haynes/Chilton Manuals available stupid Kia making my job a bit harder doing what I can.

Thank you in advance!!!

David

Do not flush the engine or put any flushing chemicals in that. Best thing you can do is shorten the oil change intervals from 20K to 3K. The detergents in the oil will slowly break down any sludge or other contaminates that may have built up in there.

If there is sludge build up in there and you flush that engine, you'll be buying a new engine. Also make sure the PCV system is functioning.

KIA is one of two vehicle manufactures that offer free repair service information to the public. Register for free.

If you already had the head done, they would have cleaned that part then so you really don't have a lot more places for it to build up. I agree with DS, maybe shorten the intervals even lower than 3K from here on.

Ditto: If running fine now just do oil changes real early - no flushing as the new oil has additives and will slowly clean up any sludge or shellac by itself. You might just luck out,
