2006 Jeep Commander

I have a friend who has a 2006 Jeep Commander about 2 weeks ago she had a routine oil change. After the oil change she was driving and her malfunction indicator light came on and the jeep didn't want to take off. Last night we were driving and after stopping at a red light the jeep had a hard time taking off, it was like she was driving with her parking brake on. Any idea what this could be, brake calipers? The MIL only came on one time and that was about 2 weeks ago.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.
Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Came back as a tranny code U0103 and P0700.

The "U" code is not a Tranny code. It's a network communication code meaning one of the computers stopped communicating. The PO700 is just a generic trans code and doesn't tell you much at all. There will be more specific codes in the trans module that would have to be retreived using a professional scan tool. It may even be the trans module that's not responding. It may have gone into "limp" mode which makes it take off in second gear. That would explain both codes.

I understand that but it also means that the root problem is the tranny - could be a sensor or synolids etc.??
