2006 Dodge Stratus engine swap wont' turn over

I have a 2006 Dodge Stratus with a 2.7L V6. The oil light came on, the engine started running rough, and then promptly quit. After this the engine would not turn over. I purchased a low mileage salvage engine (50K) and installed it over the past weekend. After installing it the replaced engine won't turn over. I removed the starter and it spins when you try to start it. I put the starter back in and it attempts to turn the engine over but it doesn't turn it over. It is almost like the replaced engine is frozen up. Any ideas?

Did you ever check to see if it was "froze up"? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I had to turn the crank shaft using a socket on the main pulley to install the torque converter. I did this with a 3/8 ratchet without too much effort.

Then we know it's not frozen. It could be a bad starter or connection problem. It will have to be troubleshooted.

I took the starter back off this afternoon and it spins good out of the engine. I decided to loosen the bolts between the tranny and engine to see if that was binding. With the bolts not tightened down and the starter back on the engine will turn over. When I tighten the bolts back up it won't. Not sure what to do.

Did you install the exact same engine, year and everything? Hopefully you put the old flex plate off the old engine on the new one or you may be dealing with a no start as well once you get it cranking. Chry used a few type of flex plates with different counts for the ckp sensors and the plates are not interchangeable. You get the wrong plate for your ckp sensor and you have a no start.....

Another possibility is the torque converter's drive hub isn't engaged all the way into the pump. Sometimes you have to wiggle and spin the converter to get the hub to engage all the way. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
