2005 Subaru Outback with Turbo hesitates when accelerating Sign In

My car is a 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5 XT turbo. The turbo has failed 2x and both times the engine was also replaced due to metal from the turbo getting in the engine. The car now has a used engine and an aftermarket turbo. We just got it back from the mechanic, and it seems to be hesitating when accelerating at higher speeds. I was going from about 40 miles per hour to 65 and the car began to almost sputter (3 jerky motions), the CEL light flashed about 3 times, then the car went back to normal and the CEL light went off. Right before this, we were trying to trade the car in at a dealer, and their mechanic told us the car has a vibration that could be the camshaft or the turbo. He said to NOT drive the car anywhere. He said the car was sluggish and there was a noise coming from the engine. We have not noticed the vibration, and the engine does have noise, but nothing that seems out of the ordinary. The acceleration I experienced concerned me. I am not sure where to start with all of this information.

Yikes - two engines already on a 2005! Get codes read, noise diagnosed and if I were you would take the hit and trade it in as you just said you wanted to anyway,

We tried to trade - want to get OUT of this car. The dealer wont take it at this point, they want us to have the mechanic take a "closer" look, all at our cost of course. As of yesterday the CEL light was not on, so there were no codes to pull. It is on today, so we will check those and take it to the mechanic that did the engine work, and see if he can get it running. Then we will try and trade. This car has been a devastating money pit.

If CEL light was on recently there's some info in it just not enough to keep it on - YET.

If one dealer won't take a 2005 in trade then another should whether new or used. Near all can fix surprises they don't find a lot cheaper than you can and take that risk or just wholesale it out a rock bottom price.

Rock and hard place - the cost of fixing this all up just to trade it probably won't pay off IMO. If it's a real wreck or obviously in trouble don't expect to get much for it.

Side note - since this one gave you so much grief IDK if it was bad luck or abuse somehow. Many Subaru folks will buy another. I suggest buying mainstream cars with no funky engines unless you can stand the heat of extra troubles down the road and expense but can get lucky. I would insist if a used car that it be inspected carefully and professionally pre purchase,
