So I was sent on active duty orders and left the vehicle with someone. I should have made sure that I drained all the fuel etc, but I had expected this person to run the car every once in awhile. Well long story short this did not happen and the vehicle sat for a year.

Upon returning the battery was dead and all the doors were pretty much sealed shut. I decided to drain all the fuel out of the tank. I removed the fuel pump by following some tutorials I found online. I cleaned the filter that was built to the pump. The dealer told me that there was no inline filter to change.

Put new fuel into the vehicle replaced the seal for the fuel pump because the old one didn't fit after being removed. Changed all the spark plugs, replaced the battery.

Vehicle started up and ran rough for a few and then smoothed out. I was followed home and found that driving was now a chore. I would hit the accelerator and at times have it on the floor before it would accelerate, when it did it was sudden and violent. This was not a problem until it was in drive, when in neutral seems to be fine. The entire drive the problem happened. At time when coming to a stop the vehicle would feel as if it would stall. RPM would drop and then bounce back up. Accelerating from a light would again take a few seconds and it was sudden, RPM's would shoot up quicker then I have ever seen before.

I'm lost on what to check next. Spark plugs were changed, pre gapped from autozone, new batt, new fuel, fuel stabilizer and cleaner, and fuel pump cleaned.

I have limited mechanical skills but would love to know what to check next. I know the brakes are not the best either but I don't think it is causing the problem with acceleration.

No check engine light, but may not have had time for the ECM to get the settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Bill

Check the intake snorkel carefully that it is sealed tight and has no leaks or hoses left off.

Im assuming that you mean the air filter housing itself or something else? I will check this when I get home. I also am planning on replacing the air filter as well. It looks pretty dirty but I would not have thought it would cause this much trouble. Are there any easy ways to detect a leak or specific hoses to check?

Thanks for the quick reply. Also is there another fuel filter on this make? I was told that it was only on the fuel pump however I have also read on online that it has an inline filter.

I'm talking about the ducting that connects the air filter to the engine.

Ok so I got home and took to your advice and took a closer look at the air filter housing and the duct connected to it. I did not see any signs of damage or leaks. However I cant really tell if there Is a small leak unless someone can think of a easy test to look for a leak. I took out the filter and looked up into the duct going to the engine. Inside I could see what appears to be a vane im guessing this is the MAF. I stuck my hand into the vent with the car running to disrupt the air flow and the engine idle increased. Once it warmed up i did the same thing to disrupt the air flow and the engine would sputter and die. Also noticed that the engine idle is about 1k even at operating temp. I know that due to the battery being disconnected this could be the ECM has still not adjusted it properly.

I did notice a small black rubber tube that comes up from the engine and is mounted to the air filter housing, it appears to be factory cut, no ripped, chewed etc. I'm not sure what this tubing is or where it should go. I can block the hose completely and the engine will not change at all.

I pulled each of the spark plug wires off the boot one at a time with the car running and it bogged down and went into a real rough idle, this should be telling me that all the plugs and boots are good.

Thanks again for the help, any more ideas or suggestions I'm open

That pipe sounds like the exact thing we're looking for. There is probably a hole in the snorkel somewhere that pushes into.

Hmm ok I didn't see anything it was attached to or could be. I attempted to load the photo on this site but was unsuccessful. I will check all around and see if there is something it plugs into.

Ok update
I decided to check some more things out and found that the problem now extends to idle under no load. Car is sitting in the garage and running in idle.

I found the MAF and unplugged the wires and the car did not die out. Is is very hard to tell what it is doing. It did not appear that anything changed. After reaching operating temp. the car idle becomes extremely rough to the point of almost stalling out. The car never did stall out though. The idle seems to jump from 500 to 1.5k and drop back down. Again I'm not sure if the rough idle is due to the ECM not having a chance to get the setting yet or other things.

If I rev the engine it will not go above 2500. It then seems to bog down. I noticed that there is a ton of foul odor smog coming from the back tail pipe. Does not appear to be smoke. Wondering if this is old fuel that has yet to get through the system. The drive home was only about 6miles so even with the tank drained could bad fuel be inside the system still?

I read online about using seafoam to try and clean the system. Has anyone used it and could someone explain where it needs to go on the Nissan sentra to clean the injectors. It says about a vac. tube.

I figured I would try this and see if maybe some things are clogged.
thanks again and I will keep plowing along.

Someone that understands it is going to have to use a scan tool to analyze the sensor data to get a picture of what is going on in the engine.

Additives for fuel: Of just a couple I do find some help with SeaFoam if in fact fuel has gummed up. Just a little as too much would make good fuel run lousy or harmful. Stabilizer was for before you left it but shouldn't hurt.

TMK, there are as many as 200 formulations for fuel in the US. What additives for exactly where and seasonal so no telling what would deal with each or any of them really.

I've had troubles in six months never mind a year with assorted yard machine engines. SeaFoam helped or seemed to, run lousy for a while and then would behave.

Your odor is no doubt because it isn't running properly yet. Keep in mind anytime engine runs lousy it's throwing junk at converter which isn't good up to killing them!

Are you able to determine with what you have if this is picking on one cylinder or random? Would be nice to know that.

Check oil. If too high and smells that is a problem. I'd just change it out anyway.

Battery was dead so it would have lost adaptive memory and could be the idle issue. Would be nice to drive the fuel out/use it up with the solvent at the risk of trashing converter if too poorly running.

Hard to say the best approaches for this issue. It might not be fuel now at all. Do be careful with brakes - you said they felt off and probably have uneven corrosion on rotors that won't just go away with use. Just be sure you can stop well and tend to that when ready.

Sorry all this happened. It probably would have all been avoided if driven periodically or stored properly if it was all well when parked. Bummer.

Good luck. Just try not to run it lousy too long and make things worse. Pro equipment and injector cleaning might be indicated??

What did the inside of the tank look like when you had the pump out? You stated you cleaned the pump's inlet filter? Normally those filters are not serviceable. There is also the fuel pressure regulator built into the sender assembly that could get gummed up.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
