2004 mitsubishi lancer died at red light and will turn over but not start	Sign In

my wife was driving home and was stopped at a red light and the car died. they pushed it across the road and called me, when i met them i tried to start it. the car would turn over smoothly but would not catch to start. we haven't tried anything yet, because i'm not a mechanic and do not know where to start. any input would be greatly appreciated

Turns over smoothy? Do you mean it turns over like the engine has no compression?

sounds like it does everyday when we first turn it over to start, but now it's just not catching and running, just keeps turning over and over. sorry if i'm not explaining it well.
