2004 Tahoe starter issue Sign In

When the engine is cold or it has set for an hour or better, I initially try to start it and the starter remains engaged and takes a few seconds to release. Does not start. I turn the key again and starts just fine. I had the starter replaced twice and had auto. Shop looking at it for 2 weeks and cannot find the issue. Any suggestions? It has 5.7 with 190,000 miles. I take very good care of it and always take it a professional shop I trust for any repairs.

my brother had a problem like this disengaging problems. went to a couple shops could not find nothing wrong. i put a shim on it to bring it a hair more away from the flywheel and it fixed the problem. you can get a shim from any autopart store for less then $3 or i just made one out of an aluminum can.

Do you mean the starter stays engaged after the truck is running or that the engine didn't start right away and the starter continued to crank after letting go of the key to make a second attempt to start it?

After releasing the key the starter stayed engaged and not start. Next turn of the key it operates correctly

That would be normal. The computer controls the cranking cycle so that is not your issue. You need to find out why it didn't start on the first attempt. I would monitor the fuel pressure during the first attempt to start it.
