2004 Tacoma w/Fuel issues - NO ENGINE LIGHTS Sign In

Hope someone can help me:

2004
Toyota Tacoma DoubleCab
V6
89K

Problem has been intermittent over last 18 months, and is now getting bad.

While driving, and I let off the gas i.e. to slow down for light, or to move lanes or to go around a corner, upon lightly pressing the gas pedal, I get nothing. The car does not respond for a couple of secs up to 8-10 seconds. Then it will "catch up" and RPM's will pick and away it goes.

Doesn't do it every time, and I haven't been able to determine what conditions make it more likely to happen.

When under power, i.e. not have just taken foot off gas to slow down etc, it NEVER cuts out. Ie. if pedal to the floor accelerating (assuming it didn't cut out) it performs perfectly. In otherwords I can't see it being a fuel pump or blocked line problem because plenty of fuel is getting through.

Taken it to dealership, and without pulling things apart, they had no clue. Tried hooking it up to their computers, but (Murphy's law) didn't have problem while it was hooked up.

It feels as if the vehicle doesn't "realize" that the gas pedal has been pushed if that makes sense.

There are no engine lights showing etc.

I have an HDE ELM diagnostics cable coming in the mail which I am going to hook up to my laptop and then go for a drive, but I am not sure I will know what I am looking for.

Any help most appreciated.

with your laptop, check the throttle position sensor and the accelerator pedal unit to make sure the pedal is correctly telling how much throttle and the tps is receiving that value for correct actuation. can also use your multimeter to check for the correct resistances thorough out pedal travel while trying a light side to side load on the pedal to check for wear, as your foot never pushes exactly straight and in either test compare results with manufactor specs for proper repair. this is assuming that you have a drive by wire, not a mechanical cable linkage. not 100% familiar with toyota but maybe will give a starting point

I hope you have more than just a cable coming. It won't do any good without OBD2 software.

If dealer's scanner didn't pick up even a code "pending" - meaning not frequent enough or clears out of memory than I'd check for vacuum leaks anywhere around throttle body, intake manifold and items to either first,

thanks for commenting. How exactly would I go about checking for leaks? I am ok with a wrench, but hardly an experienced mechanic...

thanks.

Cooler engine just wiggle any vacuum connections and look for any damaged vacuum lines. A smoke machine is safest but not reasonable for DIY checking due to cost.

Spraying carb cleaner at suspect areas (AYOR AND CAN FLASH TO FLAMES!) sparingly at areas while at idle speed will alter idle if one or more sucks in the cleaner. If the slightest uncomfortable let it go out to be checked as it is dangerous with running engine and hot areas with a flammable product.

You or anyone reading this if not sure what you are doing and where then DON'T. Send it out for the pros for checking and if found decide on fixing it yourself or not,

So I have the HDE elm cable along with proscan software. Along with trying to figure out the main issue above, in term of overall health of my truck, what else can I/should I check with the software? I see the ability to check multiple sensors etc. Any advice on what i should be looking at and or how to read the results etc would be appreciated..

If you can get data, look up your long term and short term fuel trims. Post up the readings. Realize that while the engine is running both fuel trims and O2 voltages will switch up and down. Thats normal and they are supposed to be doing it.
