My 16 yo daughter has a 2004 Sonata 2.4 L as her first car and after
driving it for a couple of months we are having a lot of general trouble
with it. There is a very loud squealing sound when it starts up that
goes away after it idles for a bit. It has difficulty accelerating
occasionally but not always. We discovered that it accelerates better
when the A/C is off. It also shakes when it idles and stalls
occasionally at stop lights. I have checked the fluids, air filter, and
replaced the spark plugs and now have reached the end of my very limited
troubleshooting ability. Seems obvious to me that the squealing is a belt that is slipping, but
I'm not sure if a belt could explain the other issues it's having. I'm
thinking we are probably talking about multiple unrelated problems. The auto parts store found no error codes and
the check engine light will flash on occasionally but then goes off
again. Today when she drove it she was unable to get it to go over 30
mph. I'm really not prepared to spend thousands for a mechanic since
this is a teenagers first car, and I'm using this whole situation as an
excuse to educate myself more on vehicle repair. Any ideas of what else I
can try?

If the check engine light is coming on, it HAS to have codes stored unless either someone is erasing them or the computer itself is bad. This may be beyond you ability and available equipment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
