Hello everyone

I’m new to the forum but not new to auto repair. However I do have a situation that I’d like to reach out for some help and advice. This will invoke a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica 3.5L V6 with 170 k miles.

First off this car hasn’t given many problems until now. Everything seemed to be working well and one day after running some errands and returning home. My left again and within less than a mile drone our house she stopped and called to tell me she was hearing the engine knocking.

As I checked the car over I found coolant mixed in the oil. And indeed the engine was knocking. Before this situation it had never ran hot or had any other signs this was going to happen.

We have replaced the vehicle. And now we have a 16 year old that I was thinking about trying to get this car back on the road for him to use. I know we may be looking at a rebuild. But I was going to try to patch this one first before going that rout. What do I have to loose right?

So my questions are. What would be the best method to tell how the coolant got into the oil. This will have to be fixed before I go any further. And my plan is to find the failed rod bearing causing the knock and replace it by dropping the oil pan. Any tips on locating the bad bearing?

I know this may be a long shot but I’ve seen some pretty crazy things in my lifetime. Any advice or help is appreciated.

IDK but would try still run it another time and cancel cylinders one at a time the bad one if only one should stop the noise or maybe make it worse.
This is engine oil as far as you know? IMO - if all mixed to a thick goo now I doubt this would end the problem, be the only one or only problem. Another bet is that it's been doing this for some time and miles just went without noticing it?

If I were you i wouldn't even attempt to repair this. You have 2 different issues now. First the coolant and then the damage done by the coolant. The coolant problem alone could be very serious and hard to diagnose. You could have cracked heads among many other possibilities. The damage done to the lower end could be very severe. Just because you can hear one bad journal, you likely have a lot more damage than that up to and including cylinder walls and crankshaft.

If you are determined to put this back on the road, a used engine would be the only sensible solution.
