Hello, I recently had my 2004 2.7 Dodge Intrepid (155000 miles) start to overheat, it was smoking so I pulled into a gas station. I saw a loose hose towards the bottom of the engine, and I am hoping that is all there is to it.But I saw fluid on top of the engine, and there was smoke coming out from top of it. I am hoping it was just boiling over and getting into the air, but I want to know the likely hood of it being a destroyed head gasket, or if It might just be something cheaper and quicker. Any advice would help.

Any leak while warmed up if sudden will boil violently so you probably don't know where from till a pressure check and attempt to fill will probably require a vacuum fill or skills/procedures then prove it out what might have happened AFTER the source leak is fixed if a hose, hole, damage to some item you might see? If it's a head gasket (be scared it's highly likely) then it can be known still some take lots of checking and tests to declare that still leaves the unknown if it can be fixed well and properly without replacement heads is for later just get it to where it can be checked first, T

That 2.7 engine has a very common leak problem at the plastic water outlet. It's not a real big deal unless you overheat the engine. You can do severe damage if you do. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yeah, I had it towed before the temp gauge got much past the middle mark, so, that plastic water outlet, or something else weaker must've popped. My temp gauge works, I just hope I was paying close enough attention to it.The mechanic that looked at it gave me a 300 dollar quote, but I guess that's what I get for not having parts. The brakes are going, and the one strut that didn't already go out, the mechanic said its about to go too so I've got about three problems stopping me from driving it. I need to apply at a job closer to home, cause I need to drive this car till it dies so I actually have money. I live an hour from work out in a small country town, and a used diesel or something like that would serve me a lot better.

Well, it never got red hot, it never caught fire, and I could put my finger on it for at least 5 seconds before it hurt. So I'm hoping it didn't get too hot.
