Hi. I have a 2004 Ford Taurus SE with about 80000 miles on it. Today I had to drive the 45 min drive back to school, and was late and had to drive pretty fast. I was also on very curvy roads, and was having to drive fast and brake hard ALOT.. lots of sharp turn and rough driving, if this helps.

I noticed when I got to school, when I was trying to park, that when I slowed down the engine stayed reved. I was pressing the brakes, but it was like someone else was pressing the gas still. It was really hard to stop and put it in park. When it was in park, it stayed reved up, about 2-3000 rpm. When I got out it was also emitting a wierd smell and was really hot.

I went back out to my car hours later. I cranked it up and it went right back up to the high rpm.

Why is it doing this??

Thanks a lot for helping!

Is there a popssibility that a floor mat may be holding the accelerator pedal down some?

Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Thank you so much for replying!
Well, I actually went and checked that after I read it to make sure (because that would be something I'd do!). But no that wasn't it..

And to update, the other day I went back out, cranked it up, and it stayed a constant 'rev' at 2 or so.. (not idle like it should of been down below 1 or w/e it is). But I noticed something..

Everytime I'd tap the brake itd go down slightly. When I let go of the brake pedal, the rpm of the engine would come up a little more, lets say 2500 rpm, and sit there. Tap the brake pedal again, it'd go down, let go of the pedal, it'd go up a little more..

This seems like something with the brakes affecting the engine?? But I know nothing about cars..

But thanks for replying, and if anybody has ANY suggestions or can help please do!!!! We dont have much money to take it to get fixed..

Thanks so much.

Idle air control motor. When you hit the bakes it drops engine vacuum which with a faulty air motor it will change the performance of the car. Common problem on the cars.
