2004 Civic shut off while driving!!?? Sign In

Hi there! I was driving 40mph down the road in my 2004 Honda Civic when the engine shut off while the car was in motion-cutting the power steering as well.Scared the heck out of me & definitely got my attention.I am not a mechanic, but it felt like the engine was starved of gas.....like running out of gas.All fluids are good,1/2 tank of gas.Plenty of juice, all lights worked fine.Tried turning it over 3 seperate times, plenty of charge-just felt like car was out of gas.Tow truck driver said fuel pump.Could it be something smaller, like fuel pump relay??Any advise is greatly appriciated as I have no mechanic and NOT much money.Thanks.

If the engine won't start, one easy way to see if you have a fuel related issue is to spray some starting fluid into the intake. If the engine starts and runs on spray you need to check fuel pressure and injector pulse. Your going to run into a problem with checking for fuel pressure because you need special adapters and a fuel pressure gauge.

If you determine that the engine isn't getting fuel, you'll have to take out the rear seat cushion and remove the fuel pump access cover. Have someone turn the key on and off a few time while you listen for the pump motor. If you don't hear the motor, you'll have to unplug the connector for the pump and check for power and ground.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

What he said ^^^ and also, just curious, did you hit a pot hole or anything like that while driving just prior to it cutting out? Also, have you had any work done to it prior to this happening?

i had this problem before too and it was my ignition switch.. not the key switch, but the little harness attached to the ignition switch.. i could tell by turning my key several times and the dash lights would come on and sometime it wouldnt because it was not making a connection.. i dont know if that is your problem, but i would check into it since it happened to my honda too.
