Two fuel related problems have started with my 2004 Honda Civic Automatic. First, the MPGs dropped from about 28-30 to 20-24 for no apparent reason. Second, the fuel gauge recently read 1/2 when the tank was nearly filled. Half an hour later it was reading OK again. Any ideas, is it maybe a fuel pump relay module?

It sounds like two seperate problems , if any.

Firstly the fuel pump soleniod relay is not on the same wiring circuit as the gauge its totally seperate.
Sometimes it can take a while to register on the dash this is normal

Secondally the mpg can be caused from a variety of factors, not nessesarilly a fault with the car. a few factors that determine the mpg are

1) air conditioning on
2) most common is leaving the rear demister on
3) different drivers and driving to places you wouldn't usually like city driving
4) service needed
5) leaving windows open needs +4hp of engine power
6) Price of fuel
7) Where you buy your fuel - is it contaminated with water

And so on the list is endless

What you should do is take an average over a months driving and if your still unsure get an emmisions reading on your car to dtermine if its burning too much fuel
