I replaced the oil sender last week due to it leaking. The oil pressure seems to be reading very high compared to what it did read with the old one. I'm not sure if the reading was lower with the old due to the leak and it's now registering correctly. What is the normal range of the pressure? I'm guessing around 40 and up to 60 when accelerating. Mine is reading just under 80 when I'm at 3000 rpm's, about 60 at 2000 rpm's, and a little over 40 at idle. Idle seems okay but the other readings seem high, right?
The video isn't the best quality but you can see the rpm's, speed, and oil pressure. I think my scanner can read live data so am going to hook it up on the way to work tomorrow and see if it reads oil pressure. If the actual pressure doesn't match up with my gauge should I buy an OEM sender instead of using the one I got from one of the chain parts stores?

That does seem a bit high. Did you use heavier oil?

Nope....5-30 and I haven't changed the oil since before the old sensor. I just wonder if it's the new sender. Think I should go with an AC Delco?

I guess you could try another one although I've never seen one act that way.

I'm gonna hook the scanner up on the way to work this morning just to double check the pressure. I had to buy an OEM thermostat for the Envoy because the one I bought from Advance set a code. Once I used the OEM things were fine. That's what makes me wonder it could be something along the same lines.
Guess I'll know more if my scanner reads oil pressure.

The problem with that is that the scanner will be reading off the same sensor that the dash gauge is. About all that would be testing is the dash gauge.
I don't think it has a PID for oil pressure anyway unless you go into the cluster and even then all you can do is manipulate the gauge.

Yeah, you're right, mine doesn't have a reading for oil pressure. Sounds like it wouldn't have told me anything anyways though.
When I'm going about 50-55 the pressure is just over 40. It only really jumps up there when accelerating. Do you think I should even worry about it? If so, what can I do to figure it out? I'm still leaning towards the sender just because the reading was fine when the old one was in there. I think I may return it and give an AC Delco a try. Think it's even worth messing with?

I agree. Changing the sensor may answer some questions for you.

I'll give it a try. I'll have to order one online since the parts department is closed by the time I get off work. I would think I'd have it by the weekend. I'll let you know the results once I swap them out.
Instead of OEM do you think one from Napa would be any better than from Advance? Heck, every single one is probably made in China, Taiwan, or Mexico anyways.

Some of the NAPA stuff has gone China too. I'd go OE. If it reads higher than what you have, you won't know if there is an issue because the reading will be in spec. If you had access to a pressure gauge with some adapters you could check the actual pressure to be sure. I have a kit for that to pull out when I need to be sure and for when I start new engines up. Oil pressure has too many consequences to leave to chance.

Maybe I'll pickup an oil pressure gauge after work. I'll use any excuse I can to add to the tool collection.

Ha.....I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I got paid for it.
Maybe I'll move to Florida and you can take me in on an internship. You think I ask a lot of questions on here...just think if I had you in front of me. You'd end up putting a deadbolt on your office door. Then again, I wouldn't be worried about screwing something up cause I'd have you there to fix it for me.

I'll sell you my toolset for the small fortune I have into it and take up welding. Come on, you do about 2 or three more projects like you end up with and you'll have more experience than any of us do. We'll be asking you for advice.

You got the basics down. All you have to do now is become proficient and make book time, so you can feed your kids and make your wife happy.

Ha....look at all the questions I ask just working on my vehicles. Imagine if I had a garage full! You guys would have to quit your jobs just to be my "live online repair support". I'd have to specialize in GM vehicles only since that's pretty much the only make of vehicle I've worked on. I've done the basics on a few other makes but never any engine work. Diagnosing would kill me unless it's a basic issue. I'd have to go back to college and get a few other degrees. I have considered taking some classes. Tuition is free for me in any IL public college due to being a vet. So, 6 years of mechanic classes, another 4 years for business management, and might as well go after an accounting degree. By then I'd be old, broke, and will probably be using a walker to get around. I might be better off becoming a doctor. At least with being a doctor the patient tells you what's wrong.

Don't say ever HT....there are some wild women out there but if I was a doctor it would depend on what she looks like!
If the patient complained as much as some of your customers probably do I would call in the anesthesiologist. Either that or tell them they need an enema just to screw with them.
I wouldn't wanna be a doctor although I would like the paycheck. I do have a degree but I enjoy more of the hands on/skilled trade type of work. I'd much rather get dirty and do the building than sitting at a computer desk designing it on a screen. I probably don't have the best job for someone who has had back surgery but I bet sitting in a chair all day would be worse on it.
