2003 Dodge stratus

Hi, I recently got a 2003 dodge stratus froma friend, and it hasnt ran in over a year and a half. Its a 4 cyclinder single overhead cam, 2.4 l g motor. 106,000 miles.
I was told it needed a timing chain, there was a new one on it but it wasnt setup up correctly. After setting it all up the car started. The car idles perfectly, you can ramp up the rmps with no problems in park. Once you put the car in drive the idle drops drastically to the point of turning off. We have been burning the gas in the car to see if that is the problem, and now it runs better in drive, wont turn off, but sill the idle drops and engine shacks. In drive though if you give it gas the car runs fine. Everything ive seen suggest belt valves and i want to check before dumping all that money on that and it being a silly problem with some kind of sensor or electrical thing. Also did a compression test and the pressure ranges from 125 to 165.
We have also cleaned out the ecr valve, csv valve, and another by the throttle body. We have spark in all the spark plugs also. Any suggestions or help would be awesome.

Those compression readings pretty much eliminate bent valves.
Assuming you don't have a check engine light on...........
First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.
If you do have a check engine light on, then have the codes read first.

Thank you for the response. I have cleaned the throttlebody already, but going to get some one to hold down the gas and scrub it with a toothbrush. Code wise we have a oxygen sensor code right now, there are 2 of them. Will try everything you posted tomorrow when im home from work and thanks again for the ideas.

That doesn't mean you have a bad sensor. what is the exact code number?

That particular code could be a bad sensor. It's a problem with the heater inside the sensor. Check the fuses first and if they are OK, replace the sensor.
