I've got a 2003 Chevy Venture van that in the last year has had 2 rocker arm studs (#4 and #6 cylinders) pulled out of the cylinder head. Both have been fixed with a Helicoil kit.

My question is, has anyone else ever had this problem? Is it systemic? Should I be looking for another car?

I haven’t seen an issue with this and I've done quite a few intake gaskets on these things. Too replace the gasket you must remove all the rocker arms and push rods.
Maybe the rockers were over tightened at some point in this engine life? It’s a relatively low torque for the bolts, at 14 foot pounds plus 30 degree extra rotation of the bolt; so maybe someone over torque them and partly pulled the threads out of the aluminum cylinder head?

Thanks for the response. I asked the service manager about this, and of course they said that isn't possible since they torque these to specs. But I still think it is possible. But the intersting thing is when they would have touched both the #4 and #6 heads? I found a registered complaint on the NHTSA website of another individual with a 2003 Venture van that had the same problem. He only had the #3 pull out, but his service tech found multiple studs on both front and read heads that were in the process of pulling out.

Are these studs pressed into the aluminum head or threaded?

You know for whatever reason I can't remember whether they're studs or not I was thinking they were bolts?
I'm pulling apart a Venture van tomorrow; I'll get back to you.

I have a 2003 Venture with 85k miles on it and have had 2 rocker arms pullout. one on number 4 and then again 3500 miles later on Number 2. Tech says this is very unusual but cannot explain why. Have you found out any more info. If it keeps happening I feel I would have been better off buying a new engine or car. Costing me about 500.00 each fix.

The rockers are attached with a 10mm bolt and the later years are 8mm.You can helicoil or use what they call a timesert. The trick is to make sure thay are straight and when you tighten the bolt to spec the cam is on the base circle. This will prevent you from forceing the valve open or trying to collapse the lifter. This is a very common problem and usually happens after a intake gasket repair has been made.

I'll leave a footnote for any searchers that come across this....

Dan is correct...... This is a common problem on those 3.1 & 3.4s but GMs stance is.....This isn't a design problem but a reassembly problem.....If those bolt are over torqued even slightly, the odds are good that the threads will get cracked and the rockers pull out....

If you remove the rockers to do the job make sure to torque them correctly........

Personally I just don't remove the rockers.....It's faster and you don't have to deal with damaging the threads...
