2002 Hyundai elantra 2.0L 90k mi. Rough idle and engine code: #3 cylinder misfire. #3 cylinder compression: 180, minumum: 210. Squirted oil in that cylinder, compression went up to about 195. Haynes manual said bad ring or cylinder wall. Someone told me could be something else. Appreciate any opinion on cause of low compression.

Thanks.

could be a burnt/damaged valve or valve sticking partially open.. You can do a leak down test to find out..
possible head gasket
Head warpage / cracked
Piston damage
damaged cracked/block

I would do leak down test first see if the issue in the head...

If it were a bad valve or head gasket then squirting oil in the cylinder would have had no effect on the compression, right! But the pressure did go up.

Get that cylinder on TDC take spark plug out and pump compressed air in it tight fit. The air with come out somewhere and if back to the throttle body it indicated an intake valve is not sealing, bent, cracked and so on. See or hear where it leaks out. Oil squirt will suggest worn and out of spec ring to cylinder wall or other problem if that made it shoot up to normal,

Do the leakdown test and you'll know for sure.. or tear it apart and you'll defenitly know for sure.

I guess I sucked at taking the compression readings. Brought it to shop, they replaced the intake manifold gasket. No more rough idle!

Thanks for the help.

That wouldn't have anything to do with compression. That was likely a vacuum leak.

You asked what could cause low compression and I answered.
