2002 GMC Sierra 1500 2wd 4.3L 136,000 miles In 2010 I had a no start, no spark plug spark problem. Since I replaced the dist. cap and rotor six months previously, I replaced the coil and ICM and still no start, no spark. Then I replaced the plug wires and installed new plugs. Still no start, no spark. I then replaced the CKP and CMP. Still no start, no spark. Finally, I removed the dist. cap and much to my surprise the aluminum pins were corroded white. I replaced the cap and the truck started and has been running great ever since. I know…I should have check it first…my stupidity… live and learn. I kept the coil, ICM, CKP and CMP since I figured they were good and I may need them in the future. Now for my current problem. The truck started stalling at stops and while driving down the highway, but restarted. I immediately changed the cap(also corroded) and rotor. The truck ran good for a few days and then, once again, it started shutting off while driving down the highway, but restarted. The service engine light never came on. The next day it started missing and then shut off and didn’t restart. I had it towed to my cousin’s garage. We replaced the coil with the one from 2010 and it started. As a precaution, since it has a lot of miles on it, I got a can of throttle body cleaner and thoroughly cleaned the throttle body and the IAC since I had the throttle body off. Left the garage and about a mile up the road it shut off. I immediately restarted it and turned around and went back to the garage. Once again, the service engine light never came on. I replaced the CKP with the one from 2010. I let it idle at the garage for half an hour and then drove it for about five miles while my cousin followed me in his truck. No stalling so I thought it was fixed. Cleaning out the throttle body seemed like it made it run a lot better. A few days later, it started shutting off going down the highway but immediately came back on while driving. Then it eventually started missing and running rough and then ran fine. A few miles later, it started missing, running rough and eventually shut off. Still no service engine light. This time it wouldn’t restart. So I had it towed to my cousin’s garage again. Checked for spark at the plugs, no spark. Since my cousin has the exact same truck, except his is a 2003, we put my coil on his truck and his truck started. We did the same thing with the ICM and his truck started. We determined that the coil and ICM must be good. After putting my coil and ICM back on my truck, we tested the (+) side of the coil with a light to determined there was power to the coil. There is power going to the coil. Since the truck started with the previous CKP, I put it back on and the truck still didn’t start. We tested the coil using the screwdriver method and there is no spark at the coil. Does the CKP have anything to do with the coil spark? I’d gladly replace the CKP with a new one, however, I hate to buy a new CKP and not solve the problem. The truck already cost me lost time at work and towing charges. My finances aren’t what they were a year ago. Could it be a ground or wiring problem? Could it possibly be the PCM is going bad or is bad? I don’t have a scanner tool to pull any codes if there were even any set. Any ideas or suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

It would still be a god idea to have it scanned for any pending or stored codes. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

Thanks Mr. Scotty. I am going to get a new CKP tomorrow and I hope to install it in the next few days. Do you know if I will have to take it to a GM dealership to have a Crankcase Variation Relearn Procedure performed? I am also working on acquiring a scanner tool. Thanks again for your response.

Mr. Scotty: I installed a new CKP, no luck. After tracing down the complete engine wiring harness, I found that a mouse got underneath the fuse box in the engine compartment and made a condominium. In the process he chewed the insulation off alot of the wiring. So far, I'm guessing this was my whole problem all along. Little had I known that while my truck was parked and I was on a trip to Florida, a rodent was determining the fate of my truck........
