2002 Ford Taurus SEL - 3.0 24V DOHC - 160,000 miles
In January 2015 the car was dead, cranked, but not starting. Tow truck shows up an hour later, it starts. Taken to shop, runs, rough idle.
Plugs replaced, manifold gasket, air flow motor hose replaced. Car seems to be ok.
November, 10 months later, won't start, jumped and started ok. new battery installed.
Ran ok for a week, then died and would not jump or start.
Towed to shop, sat outside for 2 days, started right up, no codes pulled, but fuel filter replaced.
12-8-15,About a month later, dead again, jumped and started. Running ok for now.
Now, any ideas on why or what maybe causing these problems? Electrical or mechanical? Starter or alternator?

Ok, so any ideas on why or what is causing this problem?

Check charging system first and that belt is in range on tensioner. If just running on what's left in a battery it's going to die out,

I got this from an electrical shop, now to see what happens when we isolate just the ignition key. Using the spare key as well.
6 most common issues that it could be:

1. Powertrain control module (PCM)
2. PCM Power Relay
3. Ignition Key
4. Interference of the magnetic field given off by the key and read by the transceiver; such as something hanging from the key ring.

5. DPFE Sensor
6. Starter

If your problem has anything to do with the key security system you should have a telltale security light on or flashing when you try to start it.

So far we have ruled out the ignition key as a problem. We took off everything leaving the key by itself. Also tried the spare key by itself. Still cranks but will not start.
It has been since December 8th, the last time it would crank, but not start. So its been 12 days stopping and starting with no problem?
Anything else that may cause it?

Thanks

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Hi,
Thanks for the fast reply. Getting car to do it at a service center is the problem, as she needs it daily.
Reading other posts on same/similar problems, to rule out not getting fuel, would using starting fluid spray sparingly be the answer to a fuel pump issue? Sorry, it let her sit again this morning.

That may be a shortcut to determining if you have a fuel issue in general, it will not isolate the actual cause. It could be a fuel injector or computer problem just as easily as a fuel pump or wiring issue. That's why the tests are necessary. Intermittent problems are always difficult to solve but testing is still the only solution.
You will never come out ahead by throwing parts at it.

Thnaks again for a fast reply. Great info as always. I started it with starting fluid, we took a short drive and stopped it. Started right up, went about 20-30 feet and died again. Started with starting fluid, then we went to Advance Auto, they pulled a code, P0191 - fuel rail pressure sensor circuit.
Guess that's next. Will keep everyone informed when that is done.

Thanks again for the assistance.

You have a variable pressure system operated by a fuel pump driver module so you have a lot more components to look at then just a pump.

It is great that you have isolated the problem to the fuel system. With the starting fluid you have eliminated a large number of electrical possibilities that might have created a similar issue. There are a multitude of electrical issues that could cause the fuel pump to fail to function. That being said, a taurus with 160000+ miles…….. a failing fuel pump is the most likely cause of this issue. Even if it is not bad yet, it will go out on you soon so replacing it now would be considered a reasonable choice and eliminate being stranded by that in a few thousand miles.

I can't pin a life expectancy on fuel pumps alone as some last forever and some go again in no time. Hardest thing on them is usually running low on fuel or out of fuel as it need fuel to lube and keep it cool both.
If it's not going to misbehave live while watching fuel pressure than getting a new pump is a guess only and OK to have quality new IMO even if not the problem but at least you've seemed to isolate this to a fuel delivery problem which helps,

New fuel pump being installed today after diagnostic seems to point at the pump as the problem.
Rather expensive, but the tank has to be drained, dropped, and pump installed, etc etc.

zProblem solved, we hope.

I don't know how you concluded that with no diagnosis. There is a module that controls that pump and a pressure sensor that feeds the module the info it needs and you haven't tested any of them.

The car went to a shop for diagnostic on what the problem was. I trust the shop, and this was his conclusion. The price seems in line. I would not just go ahead and replace the pump without have the diagnostics done first.
If this is not the problem, I'll let you know.

Thanks all for all the replies.

As of today, almost 4 weeks and no starting problems. Have to assume the fuel pump was the problem.
CASE CLOSED! Thanks for all the assistance.

OK - 4 weeks without the problem you and the shop/tech got lucky. I have no clue why a shop would just toss a pump without seeing it fail - it's not that hard to SEE it not right not guessing.
Let it be, you can get lucky and seems that's what it was.

I'll close this as solved and YOU may ask any moderator to re-open it upon your request to keep spammers out locked now as solved,
