2002 Ford Mustang Not starting - stuck compressor(?) and draining battery Sign In

2002 Ford Mustang, 3.8L, 80,000 miles

When attempting to start my car, the belt attempts to turn, but cannot. I noticed that every belt gear starts to turn slightly, but the A/C compressor does not turn whatsoever.

I'm also assuming this is a problem with the compressor since a few months ago, the compressor starting smoking when the A/C was turned on. The next time I started the car, the problem did not reappear.

I'm not entirely sure whether this is relevant, but turning on the A/C (obviously with the car not started) results in no air being blown out of the vents.

Another strange problem I'm encountering is that the battery drains really fast. The first time it happened, I assumed that I had attempted to start the car too many times, but it appears to drain on its own. I hear clicking now when I try to start the car because the battery is dead. I had gone out of town for a few weeks and it was completely dead, not even able to open the power locks.

Any help is highly appreciated! Smile

Take the belt off and see if compressor will still work as a pulley. It is both a pulley (clutch) and engaged is static using bushings in the compressor. You might be able to just get a clutch or bearing and disable the engagement of compressor and leave it disabled till you feel like taking on a probably expensive A/C fix and put on a new belt that has been stressed out.

Charging issues could be the belt has slipped so much alternator can't keep up for the while belt was stressed to be dealt with when you have a free run of belt over compressor,

Thanks for the response, Tom. I'll follow your advice of removing the belt as soon as I get the battery recharged.

The problem with the battery isn't that it isn't being charged. It's discharging rather quickly without me doing anything. It's like there's a short somewhere that's causing all charge to dissipate. I had imagined the compressor might be fried and a short within it was causing the battery to drain, but it isn't getting hot and a fuse would take care of stopping a short like that.

These compressors don't engage the clutch when cranking so the pulley itself has to be locked up. That is going to mean replacing the compressor just to get the engine to run.

Now, if you want the A/C to work, that is going to get much more involved with your statement that it was smoking previously. That's going to mean you are going to have to replace the Condenser, dryer and liquid line and then after it's up and running, find out what made it fail in the first place. hat could be a fan issue.

Didn't mean compressor itself was preventing starting but rather belt so burned up/stretched that alternator isn't keeping up now always with a marginal battery. I'd forget about a parasitic drain till the belt can run properly as said then it should have battery charged, checked along with charging system. The smoking compressor thing was probably the compressor plain locked tight with the belt just skidding over it rendering belt junk.

Till that is solved there's isn't much point yet in worrying about a battery drain till it's operational at all,

I'm about to get a jump start so I can try starting the car again.

So I should loosen the tensioner pulley and take the belt off the compressor to see if the compressor clutch is causing the belt to stick?

Before you do anything you need to charge and test your battery.

Absolutely charge the battery first or your alternator if just jumped is going to work like crazy - not good for it or for more diagnosis.

Again on compressors: Understand they are two things. An idler when off and a pump when on using different bearings. About all compressors at HT said earlier would not allow compressor to be engaged while cranking, in fact frequently for ages would wait till engine was running for a bit so as to not stall it when all is normal.

Many system must have the unit in place for a belt to be installed and work at all but not all. If compressor is somehow always locked up it has lots of problems going on. If to be fixed they make blanks to take its place for many. Let's not go there yet until we get this going with a charged battery and find out what more is needed,
