2002 GMC envoy 4.0 straight six runs at 210 degrees or a little over that. 115K miles. I was wondering if this model had issues with the water impeller was subject to deteriorating?

That's what your dash gauge says? Does it stay steady there once warmed up or bounce higher and lower? That's about where many would run so is this a new spot on the gauge to you or just questioning it now? Impeller issues are near always from lack of using coolant with additives and changing it on a schedule. That would probably produce odd fluctuations of temps and difficult for heater to blow hot very well. Not likely unless long term coolant neglect for that. You may be just normal for this vehicle. Dash gauges are not meant to pinpoint exact temps so well and if worried check the temp at the thermostat's housing should stay about the thermostat's rating on this layout and definitely while driving along short of super extreme ambient temperatures, T

The impellers are metal. Haven't seen one that had deteriorated the impeller to the point of overheating. What is the condition of the coolant. Seen many water pumps with bad bearings on the trailblazers. Around 210 is normal operating temperature. First, you don't have a 4.0, you have a 4.2. Your cooling fan is computer controlled through Pulse Width Modulation so the 210 degrees is both intentional and normal. The computer has the ability to speed up the fan at any time it deems necessary. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

OK - I'll close as question solved - this time things are normal for just what was discussed. OP may ask any moderator to reopen the thread if wanted, T

Just to add. If you are unsure about the state and condition of the cooling system, have your local repair shop inspect it to be sure you don't have any issues. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Good point DS - unlocked for time being. OP - yes you should want to know cooling system is good as a preventative check at this age. Know it's good ahead not on the side of a road. When many now keep vehicles much long as daily drivers a periodic check list of all systems is a good idea much like you would buying a used car even if it's been YOURS for years. I find this stuff way too common with the rage and popularity of the ever present 10 minute oil change places are not doing folks a great service in 10 minutes. Nice that places fill up low fluids but don't know when one is low it means trouble lurks and they are NOT mechanics - know that! T

Mostly stays at 210 unless I'm stopped in traffic then it will creep up to maybe 220 or so.

OK - Still could be normal. I'm impressed you are paying attention at all. HT = Hammer Time above mentioned this should know to increase fan speed at some point so there would be some variation of your gauge reading which isn't very exact IMO vs what the vehicle's computer controls are seeing. Worth knowing or I would make sure higher fan speed does in fact work. Some trivia on these temps as normal: We know water boils at 212F WITHOUT PRESSURE. Coolant mix really only raises that to about 215F or a tad more WITHOUT PRESSURE. This would be a problem temp if you gauge was accurate WITHOUT pressure but you do or should have about a 15lb pressure cap on the cooling system which raises the boiling point keeping coolant a liquid 3F degrees per pound of pressure. That puts the breaking point at 257F and you don't want to get near that much. For any reason loss of pressure this would be boiling now and that would be a real problem. Vapor doesn't help much (where boiling) in system then problem would result. The higher temps of normal really want to operate at the higher temps to get the most out of fast and clean fuel use giving you the most performance designed into it. The key here is knowing it's normal and you asked and should if not at a site in person with a tech at a check up bring it up for checks of anything you question. It's hot in lots of place right now. Never mind air temps and forecast temps right over the road with a hot vehicle in front of you at a light or in stop and go traffic you system is really working hard and YOU are no doubt asking for A/C so working harder yet! It's important to now your vehicle what is normal or an early warning before it's trouble. Even this old there should be tons of info in a really boring read in owner's manuals. Only real fault is most will suggest anything you go to a dealer that sells them and use only their products - that's expected. The info otherwise is nice to know. Bet not one in 10 people ever touched an owner's manual to their own car. Yes - you can find most on line so if you don't want to go get it can read it from whatever device you are using and should - anyone should, Tom
