2002 Dodge Dakota Valve Spring

I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota that was having some engine problems. I had it towed to a shop. At first they told me the Lifter fell off, then he said when he got into it a little more that the valve spring was broke. He told me that he ordered the spring and when he was putting it on the valve stem bent and now he has to do a complete head job (I am guessing he meant valve job) and that it is going to cost me about $1400. When I informed people at work, one guy told me he was a dodge mechanic for quite a few years and there is no way if you use the proper tools that you should bend the valve stem. He also told me that the price for the work that is being done is way too high even with labor included. I am looking for a little help here. Let me know what you think. Thanks

Depending on how the valve spring broke it could have allowed valve to collide with piston and mess up valve and head - hopefully not the piston. It would get expensive if that happened and you may not know for sure until head is removed, T
