So the other day when I was driving home from work in the afternoon my car started to overheat and the gauge was all the way in the red. I pulled over and read in the manual to try leaving it in park and revving the engine to hold the RPMs at about half the idle RPMs. This worked and I drove the rest of the way home with no problems. When I got home and let it cool off I checked the overflow tank and saw that it was empty so I filled it up with water. The next day the same thing happened. When I got home I opened up the hood and saw that the water in the overflow tank was boiling. After I let it cool off, I came back out to look at it and saw that the overflow tank was empty. I checked the radiator line and saw that it was low (I couldn't see any water under the cap) but not empty (I didn't have to fill it up very much).

I used a pressure tester when the engine had cooled off and couldn't find a leak. I left the pressure tester on with water in the radiator for about an hr and came back outside and the water level hadn't gone down. I changed the thermostat and the problem still persists. I will hopefully be able to use a block tester soon to find out if it is leaking into the exhaust. I have checked the oil level and it hasn't changed.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong? I would think if there was a leak I would lose water while driving and not after it has cooled off. It only overheats when driving home in the hot afternoon (been 100+ degrees outside at that time lately) and after being in traffic for about 40 mins. I can always turn the heater on full blast or rev the engine in neutral/park to get it to cool off when this happens. The water in the overflow tank is always boiling after it overheats. I always lose all the water in the overflow tank and some of whats in the radiator after turning off the car and letting the engine cool off.

Don't be surprised to find out that decision has cost you an engine. You need to get this towed to a shop to be analyzed accurately.

You ran it until the gauge was pegged and then RAN IT MORE! The reason the gauge has a red line is to tell you to shut the thing off. As HT beat me to it, I agree. I hope your credit rating is higher than your vision when you look at the dash because only if you are incredibly lucky will you not need a new motor. Do your cooing fans work? When it was running insanely hot and not shut off like it should were they blowing hard? Don't ever ever ever F**king ever do that again unless you don't like money.
