2002 Toyota Camry V4
70000 miles

The alternator and battery were replaced a year and a half ago. No problems with car until the last month.
It stalls while idling at intersections (not every time), check engine light comes on and stays on, battery light comes on and stays on. I asked one mechanic who didn't have a Toyota scanner to look up the problem and he said it sounded like the alternator--and maybe it has run the battery down. Well, naturally the warranty on the parts lasted one year so that's no good.

My main question since I'm going to go somewhere that can check for a fault code is that if they say I need a new alternator, is it really that simple--is there some part along the chain from the ignition to battery, distributor, alternator, etc. that could be bad and shorting out the alternator circuits over time which then leads to draining the battery. In other words, what part in the car could be shortening the life of these alternators IF they say I need it replaced. The last one cost $600 (including battery and labor) to get replaced. Any ideas what could hurt an alternator?

The first thing you need to do is get the codes scanned and post the numbers here. If you have an AutoZone in the area, they will read them for free. Don't let them interpret them because they don't have a clue.

I took the Camry to an engine performance specialist. He plugged in the Toyota scanner and there were no check engine fault codes. He said that car normally has the check engine and battery lights come on when it stalls. (Although it didn't the first few times it stalled.) The first thing he noticed when he drove it was the steering wheel was shaking. It idled at 600 RPM and he said the engine was shaking badly. Now I might not remember all the letters right, but first he suspected the ERG valve--but mine doesn't have one. Maybe because it's a V4 instead of a V6. Then he suspected the IRC? valve. But mine doesn't have one of those either. The only thing left was the throttle body. So he cleaned it. He said it needed cleaning. Now it runs smooth. No shaking steering wheel (something that's been going on for months that I didn't connect to the stalling because I thought it was natural harmonic vibration or something.) Now it idles at 800 RPM. I hope that fixes it. Is cleansing the throttle body the same as flushing the fuel injectors (which I've heard other people say in forums can cause long-term problems if the mechanic doesn't know what he's doing) or is that cleaning a different part entirely?

If you had described your problem as low idle and stalling, we likely would have pointed you to cleaning the throttle body and ISC (idle speed control) in the first place. That is different from cleaning fuel injectors as you are cleaning carbon deposits from air intake areas and the idle speed control is a small air intake.

>>I took the Camry to an engine performance specialist<< He thought it might be EGR or IRC? Hmmmm. Think you may want to look for a different 'specialist'? The only V4 engine I can think of was an industrial type air-cooled one that the brand escapes me, right now. Yours is an I-4 (inline four cylinder).
To add to Hammer, yes, the throttle body, IAC, and the injectors themselves need periodic cleaning. After you've found a different 'specialist', have a MotorVac fuel injection service done.

I hear that not only cleaning the TB helps but also checking the EGR. My question is where is it located on the 2002 Camry I4 (2 AZ FE engine)??
Thanks in advance.

If you have a question, please start a new thread of your own. This one is a year old and for a different problem/vehicle.
