2002 Buick Century Wont start in frigid cold Sign In

115,000 miles
3.1 L engine

Anytime it gets frigid cold, say round 15 degrees or colder, the car wont start. All the ACC stuff comes on, but it doesnt even try to crank. Wifes dad said to put it in neutral and try. Some safety over-ride. Sometimes that works, though I dont know if its actually the override or wahtevers causing the car to not start stops. My dad's and my thought, was battery since it only does it when its cold out. That didnt do it either.

Just the fact that sometimes it works in neutral is enough for me to suggest replacing the "Neutral Safety Switch" is what it's called.

It may be a connection at it or something funky but I don't think they cost too much and worth it to try. If everything looks right and it never happens again that's the proof that, that was the trouble. I hate to suggest an unnecessary part replacement but that problem is too annoying to not try something asap - sure you aggree,

Actually, my dad told me the same thing when I told him the battery didnt work. That still befuddles me it only does it in the cold. But if it works, I dont care why Wink

That's just a copy out of a AutoZone parts site. Part is cheap. The fact if it is a fact that putting it in Neutral someetimes works puts this high on the list.

Not sure where it's located. Some at shifter some at trans. Either way it migh be cold sensitive or possibly out of adjustment if adjustable at all and appears it has some adjustment by the looks of it.

There are plenty of other things but when it was said that putting it in N made a difference I wan't thinking of a long list of other maybes that cause intermittent starter motor engagement as described,
