Was any work done on cooling system recently? Hows coolant level? In my experience the 3400 is picky about filling and bleeding the cooling system, and when they overheat, they dont like it at all. Make sure level is up and bleed the system properly. From a cold start can you feel when the thermostat opens (upper rad hose should stay cool until engine reaches operating temp, then as thermostat opens you can feel it warm up). Check gauge temp against actual engine temperature (nice to have an infrared thermometer). Get a pressure tester on it and see if you have any leaks (hopefully not internal). Some parts stores may loan you one if you dont have access to one. How many miles on it? Has the head gasket ever been replaced? ____________________________________________________ Willing to help, willing to learn... Rob

It COULD be, but need to do those tests, unless you want to throw money at the problem. If you dont want to or cant do those tests, I would have it towed to a reputable garage. ____________________________________________________ Willing to help, willing to learn... Rob

Unless the water pump is leaking, I severely doubt it. You need to start out doing some pressure testing to the cooling system and making sure the fan is coming on which doesn't happen until about 225 degrees so it's not overheating below that. It's really sounding s lot like a blown head gasket though. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Cheated and checked rough location. Fans don't come on when that cold much if ever. With HT, check for head gasket especially on this engine and the barfing out recovery tank, T

What do you mean heat comes and goes? NO - when cold enough out and is it should stay put. You do NOT need to overheat for a head gasket to fail. What you seem to have is vapor in the system (combustion gasses making pressure) behaving like an overheat and probably is as the unseen vapor area not monitored by your temp gauge could be wildly hot but not where it senses it for gauge. It has a problem and using this car without knowing just what is no doubt just making it worse and will be more trouble than it is now, T
