I have a 2001 grand prix se with a 3.1 motor with 198000 miles on it. About a month ago my engine light came on so i got it hooked up to a reader and it was reading error it stayed on for a few days then went off and car was running fine. Thursday i was idling and in neutral and my car started to spit and sputter like it was running out of gas i took off engine light came back on flashing and disappeared had it to the shop friday fixed the catalytic converter other than that couldn't find anything wrong yesterday i had been driving around 35 to 40 miles per hour when it started all over again when i would get the car under 30 mph the light would go solid over that it would flash and acted like there was no power the light finally stayed solid this am went to get it checked still read error and couldn't read the code i drove it most of the am and i parked shut the car off for 5 minutes and light went off and the car is running fine i cant figure out what is going on and some advice would be great

What were the exact code numbers stored. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

If the check engine light comes on, then there are codes stored and they need to be retrieved.

How else can we get the codes? The computer wont kick them out. My abs light is on as well and it wont give us a code for that either

You're not getting codes because you don't have the right equipment to do that. You can use a generic code reader to get PCM codes but you need something a lot more professional to get ABS codes. If it truly won't store codes, then you have a problem with the PCM itself and that will have to be replaced before going any further but I'm betting the codes are there and can be read. If you live near an Autozone, they will read them for free, except in CA.

You check pin 16 in the data link connector to see if it has battery voltage? You don't have power at the DLC and you won't have any communications with your scan tool or code reader. If you don't have any power, check the cigar fuse in the IP fuse block. The cigar fuse blows a lot from accessory adapters. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
