2001 escape shuts off when shifted into park Sign In

the vehicle is a 2001 ford escape v6 with approx. 130k miles. it shuts off when shifted into park after being driven. the engine light is not on, it does not through any trouble codes, and other than it shutting off in runs perfect. idles just fine warm or cold. idle does not change before vehicle shuts off. it acts as though it does when turning the key to the off position. i cleaned the throttle body and the maf sensor. this did not help. any help on what to try next would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean you have no problems at all in any other gear but "Park"? You can go from drive to reverse and back and not have a problem until you try Park?

That is correct there is no other problems with any other gears. And also I believe that it only happens after taking foot off brake pedal. U come to a stop, shift into park, take foot off brake and turns off approximately ten seconds later. It is my girlfriends vehicle but I have driven it many times and everything else if fine. It does not do this all the time but it is doing it more often as time goes bye. I told her to try to continue holding the brake pedal down for awhile after putting it in park and she said it did not shut off when she did that. Could this be a clue or just a coincidence because this issue is intermittent?

I'll tell you, this is not a symptom i have ever seen before but we see new problems every day. I can only think of one common denominator to these symptoms and that would be the transmission range sensor, formally call neutral safety switch. I have never seen one do this so be sure about the symptoms you describe.
