2001 Protege Cylinder Head Sign In

I recently purchased a used cylinder head for my 2001 2.0L mazda protege. The cylinder head was rebuilt and all machining had been done before I bought it. However, it did not come with journal caps for the camshafts. I was told that I needed a cam bore alignment to ensure that the camshafts spun freely during engine operation. Is cam bore alignment the proper terminology here? Some people seem to not know what I'm talking about.

you will have to take it to machine shop.. they will measure the cam make sure it's not true, journals are not scored or worn and see if they are out of round.. depending how much they take off they will have to get bigger bearings to accommodate..

usually need V-blocks, dial indicator, plati-gauge and equipment to machine(if necessary).. and might need some special tools to install bearings depending on style.

My car does not have cam bearings. I was told the machine shop would not need the camshafts, just the head and journal caps

Bearings or not they still need to put it together and check journal bores make sure they are not out of round, scored or worn.. its good idea to have cam checked you put scored cam in new head your just going to eat away your journals.. also good to setup in V blocks and check make wire the condition of the cam it self.. and it will need to be fitted and checked clearances with plasti-gauge.. incorrect clearances cause all sorts of damage to your new head.

also they will check lobes see how much they have worn over its life.. it may be below minimum spec too.
