2001 Mustang GT 4.6, hard to start, runs rough	Sign In

I have a 2001 Mustang GT with the 4.6 liter V8. It was running fine until the other day when I merged on the highway and was at WOT. Now the car lacks power, runs rough, and the exhaust is making a sputtering noise. No check engine light is on. The car is hard to start now. When at idle, it seems like as if the car wants to die out. The car is drivable, but the engine runs rough all the time. I've checked the oil, and there is no antifreeze in it. The exhaust does not smell funny and does not have smoke coming out. The car has 60000 miles on it. It is an automatic. What would cause this kind of problem?

Start with installing a fuel pressure guage and check fuel pressure. Make sure all of the injectors and coils are firing also. If all checks out you may want to pull the spark plugs and check for any signs of discoloration and wear. That is the best place to start.

Is it safe to say that my problem more than likely is NOT mechanical with the motor? It isn't burning oil and it's making a noise from underneath the middle of the car (almost like an exhaust leak). The engine itself sounds normal.

The best way to rule out a mechanical problem is to do a compression test across the board. If it is ok, then do a vacuum test.
